More About The Alamo Inn BnB:
A Historic & Highly Recommended Place to Stay
Since we opened our doors in November 1999, Keith Hackland and Audrey Jones’s hands-on management have made Alamo Inn B&B one of the most recommended bed and breakfasts in the area.
Our building at 801 Main Street (centrally located on Alamo town square) dates back to 1919 when the City of Alamo was just getting established.
Our Garden Suites (at the east end of Alamo town square) date to the 1970s, and are set in gardens of native shrubs and trees, attracting birds and butterflies. Its setting provides insight into the wildlife areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley floodplain. It is also the home of Guardian, our Chinese farmyard goose, famous for his appearance in the Netflix documentary “Birders”. We feed wild birds here, under the watchful eyes of Guardian.

Unwind in Comfort
Experience Beautiful & Modern Suites
Our restored 1919 Alamo Land and Sugar Company building and 1970s Garden Suites provide a range of beautifully furnished, individually air conditioned accommodations, equipped with modern amenities, all with kitchenettes or full kitchens, en suite bathrooms, full linens provided, with beds of various sizes (and shampoo plus conditioner, soap, and hair dryer).
Due to our buildings’ historic nature, our rooms and suites in all our buildings are smoke-free and perfume-free. We have no elevators, but we do have rooms and suites available on the first floors, and some of these are handicapped friendly.
Our friendly staff is dedicated to providing southern, border, self-serve bed and breakfast hospitality (included in the rate), making your stay at the Alamo Inn B&B, Gear and Tours stress free and memorable. The simple cold breakfast and lunch fixings are available 24/7 and are included in the room rates.

Birding in Texas
Texas offers the richest terrestrial birding in the United States, with over 675 species in an area of 269,000 square miles (696,000 square kilometers) with rainfall of 60 inches (150 cm) in the east diminishing to 0 inches (0 cm) at El Paso in the west. The richest birding in Texas, is on the Lower Rio Grande floodplain. It includes semi-desert scrub inland, riparian and thorn scrub woodlands with resacas (ox-bow lakes) and salt lakes on the floodplain, coastal salt marsh, lagoons, islands and sand dunes at the coast. Here the Rio Grande (5th longest river in the U.S.) twists and turns, until it meets the Gulf at Boca Chica.
The floodplain here is the most biologically diverse area in the United States, where temperate and tropical species mix. Our four counties have over 560 species of birds, over 300 species of butterflies, and 120 species of odonates. Estimates of plant species run well over 1,000, moths into the thousands, and no one dares estimate arthropoda. Rainfall averages 22 inches per year, but it is erratic, with up to 40 inches in wet years, and down to 8 inches in dry years.
Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge (12 minutes drive from The Alamo Inn BnB) has the combined bird and butterfly species count that surpasses every other U.S. National Wildlife Refuge, while Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (on the coast 55 minutes from us) has the highest bird species count of any U.S. National Wildlife Refuge.
Every month of the year the fabric of migrating birds moves north or south over the Lower Rio Grande Valley flood plain. Many species of waterfowl, waders, raptors, and some warblers winter on our flood plain, while summer visitors and breeders include Groove-billed Ani, Wood Stork, Jabiru, and flamingo species. 60% of U.S. bird species interact with the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Winters here are warm (with the exception of a few brief Northers), and summers are warmer, but generally with a constant breeze, and less humid than most of the Gulf Coast. Birders and photographers find many reasons to visit, including the regular appearance of rarities unique to our area, and so birders and photographers return here every year or two. There are thirteen hot spots with visitor amenities and more with no amenities within 10 to 35 minutes drive of us. All the floodplain hot spots are within 90 minutes drive.
