SEASONS FOR BIRDING & PHOTOGRAPHY

We are open 365 days 12 months of the year. The best time to visit the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas is the soonest you can make it here. Considerations are:

i) Easiest time for first visit is November through March, when the City and State Parks and Refuges have their bird feeders operating and when most of them offer their birding walks, and these are generally our coolest months (our winters are warm and summers are warmer). Our resident birds are not shy in this fall-winter-spring season, and we have large numbers of wintering species.

ii) Spring migration runs from April 10 to May 20. A few migrants show up in March and early April. Our area here has the heaviest measured bird migration on earth. Check online for radar reflecting US bird migration. New technology is fast developing software to count and identify night flying song birds.

iii) Fall migration runs from August 1 to November 30. Shorebirds and related species start migrating in June. Some migrants, especially our wintering bird species, continue until December 31.

iv) Wintering visitors arrive October through December, and include raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, and shorebirds.

v) Summer visitors include Groove-billed Ani, Wood Stork, Flamingo, Jabiru.

vi) Uncommon, rare and vagrant visitors generally show up from November through March, but can show outside those months. The Lower Rio Grande Valley offers not only the richest year round birding in the USA, but also the most uncommon, rare and vagrant visitors.

 BIRDING HOT SPOTS

For its size (40 miles by 140 miles) the Valley also offers the most birding hot spots per square mile of any US birding area, of which 20 hot spots are staffed with visitor amenities. There are probably over 80 hot spots that do not provide visitor amenities, but offer good birding. Go to BirdersOnTheRoad.com for more detailed information, and check e-bird for this area.
